PBTS Hosts Juried Art Show in New Grune Family Gallery

Posted on Jan.22, 2010, under Home, Press

Players by the Sea is hosting a juried art show to correspond with the Grand Opening of the newly renovated Grune Family Gallery, as well as the opening of award winning play by Yasmina Reza, ‘Art.’ Art show finalists will be displayed in the gallery during the run of ‘Art’: February 19, 20,25,26,27 at 8:00pm and February 21 at 2:00pm.  Winners will be announced at the opening night reception on February 19th.  Tickets are General Admission, $20 and $17 for students, seniors, and military.  Click here for reservations or here forparticipating in the art show. George and BettyLu Grune, longtime patrons of Players by the Sea, have generously made the renovations to the Grune Family Gallery possible.  Before retiring, George was the Chairman and CEO of The Wallace Reader’s Digest Foundation, and has served on the board of the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens, Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra and the National Boy and Girls Club.

Hope McMath, Director of The Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens, will serve as the prestigious judge for this juried art show.  She was named Museum Educator of the Year for the state of Florida in 2003 by the Florida Art Education Association and the Art Educator of the Year by the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville in 2005.  Her relief prints, etchings, and artist books are exhibited and collected throughout the Southeast, with a recent exhibition entitled “Human:  A Personal Reaction to The Declaration of Human Rights by Hope McMath” at University of North Florida.

Dave Alan Thomas makes his PBTS directorial debut with ‘Art.’  In it, prosperous doctor Serge (Paul Carelli) has paid a fortune for a new painting.  It’s all white. Marc (T.R. Hainline) is appalled and can’t believe that his friend could consider this, “art.”  Yvan (Joe Walz) tries vainly to placate both men and maintain friendly relationships.  This sophisticated comedy examines the nature of friendship and the power of art to unsettle our assumptions.  The play’s resolution is shocking, hilarious and satisfying. The production team also includes Assistant director / dramaturg Clenton Hollinger, stage manager Samuel Willis, assistant to the director Daryl McDanial, and production designer Lee Hamby.

Sabrina Fair is a modern version of the Cinderella fable,” writes Atkinson, in the Times. It is set on Long Island in the 1950s, and deals with the involvement of a very rich family named Larrabee with Sabrina Fairchild, the daughter of their family chauffeur. She is bright, well-educated, and has just returned from five years in Paris, where she has done a brilliant job as an executive in a U.S. government overseas office. She has come home to find out if she is still in love with the younger Larrabee son, David. The elder son, Linus, a cynical, good-humored tycoon who has taken control of the family fortune, detects Sabrina’s feeling for his brother, and for his own amusement lays a trap to bring them together. It works: David falls in love with Sabrina and wants to marry her. At the same time, a rich young Frenchman who has known Sabrina in Paris turns up and asks her to marry him. Faced with this dilemma, Sabrina discovers it is really Linus she wants. After an amusing scene in which Sabrina’s father, the chauffeur, makes a rather amazing revelation, Sabrina breaks down Linus’ resistance and gets her man. An unusual number of fine character parts for actors: the beautiful mother of wit and perception; the father, whose one passion is attending funerals; the chauffeur who has been dabbling in the stock market and likes his job because it gives him time to read; the smart magazine editor who, as a house guest, is the interested observer

Talking Heads

BY ALAN BENNETT
May 14 – 22 2010

These revealing monologues by one of Britain’s leading playwrights made their debut on the BBC and were a hit on Public TV in America.  In her own words, each character sketches the small triumphs and tragedies of her everyday life, often hilarious and, at the same time, deeply moving.  An alcoholic vicar’s wife, a nosy old biddy who writes poison-pen letters to her neighbors, an acerbic antiques dealer and an old lady whose mania for cleanliness gets her into a fatal predicament are some of the characters you’ll meet.

Comedy and drama mix in this tale of love, heartbreak, guilt and redemption. Three outcast characters do battle with the deepest yearnings of the human heart during one whiskey-soaked night. Set on a dilapidated Connecticut farm in the early 1920’s, this beautifully-written drama focuses on Josie, a strapping country girl whose outward bravado masks a sensitive core; her crafty, hot-tempered Irish father and their landlord, Jim Tyrone, a broken-down actor and alcoholic who is haunted by memory and unable to express his love for Josie.  After the original 1957 Broadway production, the play has been revived frequently, including a 1973 production in which Jason Robards, Jr. and Colleen Dewhurst made an indelible impression. A Moon for the Misbegotten has been revived frequently, most recently in 2006.
